Dr Susam Boral is an applied mathematician with a PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He secured First Class First Rank in both BSc Mathematics Honours and MSc Applied Mathematics from the University of Calcutta. His research lies at the intersection of hydroelasticity, wave"structure interaction and ocean engineering, focusing on mathematical modelling of gravity-wave interactions with floating and submerged flexible structures. His work also includes submarine power cable dynamics, offshore renewable-energy systems, and emerging studies in quantum computing, particularly the simulation of classical PDEs using quantum algorithms.

Project Title
Surface gravity wave interaction with floating and submerged flexible structures in a two-layer fluid
From
01-JAN-2025
To
01-DEC-2026
Summary
The NSFC-funded project focuses on mathematical modelling of surface gravity-wave interactions with floating and submerged flexible structures in a two-layer fluid. The study aims to understand how stratification, structural flexibility, compressive force and hydrodynamic effects influence wave propagation, resonance, mode interaction and wave blocking. The project is closely aligned with my broader research interests in hydroelasticity, wave-structure interaction and ocean engineering. However, following my departure from China, I am no longer directly involved in the day-to-day execution of the project.

My research interests lie in applied mathematics, hydroelasticity and ocean engineering, with a focus on mathematical modelling of wave"structure interaction and offshore energy systems. I study surface and internal gravity waves interacting with floating and submerged flexible structures under currents, compression, stratification and damping. My work combines analytical, asymptotic and numerical methods to investigate wave blocking, resonance, mode interaction and modulation instability. I am also interested in the dynamic modelling of submarine power cables, including their interaction with waves, currents, floating offshore platforms and mooring systems.
