Research Projects
Project title The development of Surface Acoustic Wave Strain Sensors SAW's for Process Monitoring
Summary Surface acoustic wave strain sensors have advantages of wireless and passive operation, and have significant potential in strain measuring applications on rotating or mobile equipment. The project builds on previous projects undertaken within the department investigating fundamental aspects of SAW sensors. The current project focussed on wireless interogation and application investigations. (with D.Geraghty)

Project title Development of technical intelligence for energy saving in pneumatic production systems
Summary The development of accurate device models for pneumatic actuation systems requires the combination of discrete and continuous models. The integration of these models with appropriate machine control systems such as PLC and DCS systems, could allow for the predictive consumption of compressed air. The postdoctoral research project investigates this specific area in collaboration with HP Ireland and the I2E2 competence centre research activity taking place in TCD

Project title In-process monitoring during abrasive material removal processes
Summary The aim is to develop a methodology for measuring and characterising the abrasive material removal processes for finishing and superfinishing of biomedical components. The project will consider the development of processing and decision making algorithms including the correlation of the in-process sensor information with the process quality.
