Biography
After a classical education at The High School, Dublin, I entered Dublin University (Entrance Scholarship 1960), was awarded Foundation Scholarship in Natural Sciences and obtained a first class honors Zoology degree in 1964. Student activities included Choral Society, Sailing club, Librarian of the ‘Phil’ and field trips where I developed a love of the Irish landscape. At the Salmon Research Trust, Mayo, I studied stream fish and invertebrate populations in 1962 and 1963. After graduation, I took up a VSO research assistantship / fellowship in 1965 in the University of Ghana’s Volta Basin Research Project, assisting with chemical, plankton, fish and invertebrate surveys and lecturing at the Universities of Ghana and Cape Coast. This period led to 7 research reports, a MSc on developing fish populations of the new reservoir and 8 peer-reviewed papers. In 1974 I completed a PhD on saline lake ecology at the University of British Columbia, which yielded 6 papers, and taught Introductory Biology there and at Simon Fraser University, before two years lecturing in limnology and fisheries biology at the University of Victoria. In 1977 I returned to TCD as a lecturer in Biology, became a Senior Lecturer in 1988, and Fellow in 1991, having developed the fields of Freshwater Biology and Fisheries Biology in Trinity, co-ordinated a 12-centre Erasmus network in Limnology and written and consulted extensively about environmental pollution. In College I supervised 20 postgraduates and examined as many PhD theses in Ireland, UK and France. I was elected Secretary of the Royal Irish Academy’s National Commission for Hydrobiology, chaired the Wildlife Committee of An Taisce and served on the Government Wildlife Advisory Council and Water Pollution Advisory Council. Roles in the past decade included Head of Zoology Department TCD, External Assessor for the UCD Zoology Department Review, External Examiner to the Environmental Science Degree at UCD and to both the Zoology Degree and Diploma in Field Ecology, NUI Cork; Organising Committee member of the 1998 International Limnological Conference in Dublin and chair of its Publications Committee; organizer of national meetings on freshwaters and international meetings in Ireland, France, Norway and Austria as a founder member of the EU Network CRAYNET; Professeur Invité at the Université de Poitiers in 2004, and invitations to speak at international meetings in Poitiers, Geneva, Grenada and Czech Republic and regional meetings in Cork, Leeds and Bristol. I remain active in ecological research involving crustaceans (crayfish and woodlice), eels and temporary water-bodies, with several books, chapters and over 125 refereed articles.
