Professor John Horne

Fellow Emeritus (History)

A member of the Department of History in Trinity College Dublin since 1977, I was appointed to a personal chair in Modern European History in 2003. Initially a labour and social historian, I have engaged with cultural history for the last fifteen years, especially relating to the study of the Great War, without renouncing my earlier commitment to social history. France has been at the centre of my interests, but I have always done comparative history at the level of research as well as at that of conceptualization and reflection. More recently, I have been drawn by the question of how to write the contemporary history of Europe at a transnational level, rather than as a set of comparative national histories. In addition to being an executive member of the Research Centre of the Historial de la Grande Guerre, Péronne (France), I am on the Management Committee of EURHISTXX, a European contemporary history network made up of twelve research institutes and history departments across Europe. In 2008 I was appointed the first director of the new Centre for War Studies in TCD. I have supervised PhD theses in many aspects of First World War studies in different countries and in various fields of twentieth century French history.
