Professor Johnnie Gratton

Fellow Emeritus (French)

I studied French at the University of Kent at Canterbury (BA 1972), where I went on to become a postgraduate (1972-75). I obtained my PhD, on 'The Poetic Language of André Breton', in 1981. My first teaching post was in the French Department of University College Dublin, where I worked from 1975 to 2002 before being appointed to the 1776 Chair of French at Trinity College Dublin in 2002. I served as Head of Dept from 2002 to 2005, before being awarded an IRCHSS Senior Research Fellwship for the academic year 2005-06. I was elected a Fellow of the College in 2004 and was appointed Director of Research of the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies in October 2006. As well as language, I teach modern and contemporary French literature, particularly autobiography and biography, and, at postgraduate level, contribute actively to the French Department's MPhil programme, Textual and Visual Studies, which I also currently direct. My main current research interest lies in contemporary French autobiography and biography, with particular reference to works exploring the relations between writing and photography.
