| Description of Research Interests |
| My main research focuses on the behaviour of organic matter and clay minerals in sedimentary rocks during thermal maturation. I use transmitted and reflectance microscopy, x-ray diffraction and isotope ratio mass spectrometry to assess changes in colour, vitrinite reflectance, crystallinity and ä15N and ä13C of rocks heated through burial, through igneous intrusion and through lab-based heating experiments. I am particularly interested in the instrumental analysis of ä15N from Palaeozoic rocks and its uses in chemostratigraphy and determination of trophic structures of extinct fossil communities. Since 2005 I have been involved in a research project which looks at the environment in the Old Library Building, Trinity College. I am working on the accumulation rate, distribution, type and size of dust in addition to gaseous compounds (VOC's, NO2, SO2) and their impact on the collection. I am involved in research for the construction industry into failure of building materials (aggregate, concrete, slates) and in aspects of building conservation and repair, including efflorescence in brick, and identification of mortar types from conservation projects. I am involved in a project with the pharmaceutical industry which investigates by PXRD quantification of polymorphs of the active component in a drug once it is mixed with excipients and tableted. |
