Prof Louise Doyle is Professor in Mental Health Nursing at Trinity College Dublin. A Registered Mental Health Nurse and Registered Nurse Tutor, she has over 30 years' experience across clinical practice, education, and research in mental health care. Louise has extensive teaching and curriculum development experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level and is module leader on the interdisciplinary `Suicide, Suicidal Behaviour and Self-Harm' module on the MSc mental health which was the first MSc level interdisciplinary module developed in Ireland on suicidal behaviour. In addition to her teaching, Louise supervises across the BSc, MSc and PhD programmes, with a number of her PhD students focused on suicide and self-harm. Louise's research, spanning qualitative, quantitative, and particularly mixed methods approaches, focuses on mental health and recovery, with an emphasis on suicide, self-harm, and marginalised communities. She has led or co investigated more than 35 research projects, generating resources to support suicide prevention and self-harm care across diverse populations, including young people, healthcare providers, university students, and LGBTQIA+ communities, and across settings such as mental health services, Emergency Departments, and prisons. Professor Doyle has published extensively in peer reviewed journals, books, and book chapters and her findings from several studies have been reported in the media. Her work has influenced national policy and practice, informing the National Clinical Programme in Self-Harm and Suicide-related Ideation, providing the evidence base for the development of regulatory guidance on LGBTQIA+ mental health care, and contributing to parliamentary discussions on emergency mental health service provision in Ireland. She is currently Principal Investigator on the final study in a 3-phase research programme focusing on the provision of care to people who present to the Emergency Department with self-harm and suicidal ideation. Phase 1 focused on the experiences of service users, phase 2 focused on the experiences of family members, and this 3rd phase is focused on the experiences of ED staff in a mixed methods study due for completion in April 2027. This research programme is funded by the suicide prevention charity 3ts (turn the tide of suicide) and the Irish Research Council. Prof Doyle is also a co-applicant on the HRB-funded VISTA (vision to action for promoting youth mental health in Ireland) programme. Taking an Implementation Science approach with embedded authentic PPI, VISTA is a ground-breaking research programme designed to implement Ireland's 10-year mental health policy, Sharing the Vision. Focused on prevention, early intervention, and recovery, VISTA aims to identify implementation determinants to Sharing the Vision and develop implementation blueprints designed to overcome barriers. Prof Doyle is co-leading SOCMED, the first work package on this programme. SOCMED is a mixed methods project exploring the barriers and enablers of social media use as a tool for mental health promotion by adolescents and young people. Prof Doyle is also a member of the IMPIC work package which is focused on improving the experience of involuntary care in Ireland. The VISTA project is due for completion in 2028. Prof Doyle is also a member of CO-PRIME (co-producing and promoting research and innovation in mental health), which is the first mental health Collaborative Research Network in Ireland. This landmark 5-year initiative brings together researchers, people with lived experience, clinicians, policymakers, and community organisations in a single, coordinated network. With a consortium of almost 70 partners, CO-PRIME will advance mental health research with real-world impact. Prof Doyle is co-leading a cross-cutting domain focused on ensuring the embedded inclusion of minority and marginalised groups within each of the work packages of CO-PRIME.
