Dr. Gursahib Singh Bhatia

Assistant Professor in Design and Innova (Mechanical, Manuf & Biomedical Eng)

Dr. Bhatia is an Assistant Professor in Design and Innovation in the Discipline of Mechanical, Manufacturing & Biomedical Engineering. Gursahib's research integrates experimental mechanics, materials characterization, and fractography to advance the understanding of composite material behavior. His current interests include the repair of offshore energy structures, sustainable composites, bio-inspired materials, and advanced composites for prosthetic applications. Prior to joining TCD, Dr. Bhatia developed and manufactured an advanced hybrid composite design aimed at improving the compressive performance of composites containing a stress raising feature. This design was first of its kind with a very low added weight penalty while increasing the structural performance. Previously, Dr. Bhatia investigated damage mechanisms for in-situ polymerizable thermoplastic-based laminates under impact loading and proposed an innovative repair technique using vacuum and thermal consolidation, aimed at repairing offshore wind turbine platforms. He also explored the feasibility of employing a thermography-based technique to characterize the fatigue response of these composites. Additionally, his research focused on the fractography analysis of bio-epoxy and thermoplastic based composites subjected to different mechanical loadings. During his doctoral studies, Dr. Bhatia examined the damage evolution in patch-repaired laminates using Digital Image Correlation and Acoustic Emission, identifying key parameters that affect the post-repair static and cyclic performance of adhesively bonded patch-repaired composites.
