My primary identity is as a psychotherapy researcher. I have written 6 books, and approximately 80 book chapters and research papers. My primary research interest is the development of emotion-focused therapy (EFT) and its adaptation for various diagnostic presentations. I have recently worked on the adaptation of EFT for generalized anxiety disorder in a primary care heath setting; anxiety in a college population; and depression and anxiety in a breast cancer population. Studies carried out within my research lab focus on various aspects of the delivery of psychological therapies for a range of mental health difficulties. I have significant experience in the area of randomised controlled trials, and have supervised, designed and implemented several trials in both face-to-face and online internet-delivered therapy, with a particular focus on the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. I co-direct the E-Mental Health Research group (running research projects currently supported by industry partner SilverCloud Health and the Irish Research Council). My studies (including an evaluation of the nationwide Counselling in Primary Care service) have been hosted by services of the major public health providers such as the Health Service Executive in Ireland or the National Health Service in the UK. Projects on which I was Principal Investigator have been, in some cases repeatedly, funded by the Health Research Board, the Irish Research Council, SilverCloud Health, Bodywhys, the Fullbright Commission, etc. Many funded projects involved direct collaboration with industry partners. My research lab has also trained a number of PhD students and post-doctoral researchers.
