ARAS AN PHIARSAIGH

Ana Pérez-Luño has been a Full Professor in Management at Pablo de Olavide University (Seville, Spain) and she is an Associate professor in International Management and Entrepreneurship at Trinity Business School, Trinity College Dublin. She is Doctor Europaeus awarded with an Outstanding Cum Laude qualification and have a degree on Business, another in Marketing and a recent one in Psychology. She has been a visiting pre-doctoral research scholar at Jönköping University (Sweden), a visiting post-doctoral research scholar at Syracuse University (USA), at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (USA), at King's College London (UK) and at TU Dublin (Ireland). She worked for global management consulting firms such as Deloitte and Arthur Andersen, and she manages a non-profit foundation. She has equally taught graduate and undergraduate courses at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. She has been and she is the principal investigator of different national competitive research projects and she has participated in different competitive and international research projects. Among other international projects, she belongs to the INN-LAB Research Centre (https://www.upo.es/inn-lab/en/home/), to ECREABIEN (https://www.upo.es/investiga/ecreabien/en/home/), and is a member of the GEM (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor) International Project. As a result, she has published high-impact academic papers (e.g. Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, Family Business Review, Human Resource Management, Technovation, British Journal of Management, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, Technology Analysis & Strategic Management, Journal of Business Research, among others), different book chapters, a number of publications and participation in media, and has taken part in over 80 conferences. She has won several awards and Scholarships, has occupied a range of institutional positions, and she has chaired and has participated in the organising committee of several conferences and workshops. Dr. Pérez-Luño's research interests have evolved over time. Her first contributions date back to her doctoral dissertation and address the question of how different contingencies, knowledge, human resources, high-performance work practices, as well as market and entrepreneurial orientation influence innovation generation, innovation adoption, and company success. Over the last years, she has combined her original line of interest with another field: the psychological variables of students, managers and entrepreneurs that lead to creativity, innovation, and business success. Within this latter subject, she has focused on mental health, i.e., mental disorders such as ADHD and stress, and positive mental health behaviours, e.g., wellbeing and Psychological Capital. Ana Pérez-Luño's dedication to the impact of mental health on individuals' behaviours has led her to undertake a degree in Psychology that she has completed at the UNED (Spain"'s Distance University). Along with her academic interests, one of Ana's main hobbies is to travel and get to know different cultures. That is why she has moved to different universities during her life. She has three sons (two teenage girls and a six-year-old boy). She likes them to join her in her adventures. May be because she likes adventures, she is a tireless reader. She also likes to play paddle and loves walking.
Project Title
Innovation in startups: A contingent analysis of entrepreneurial creativity, the characteristics of the founding team and the participation in acceleration programs
From
01/09/2021
To
01/09/2024
Summary
The key aspects for economic growth and improved productivity lies in the entrepreneurial capacity of an economy (Prodi, 2002). In Spain, the 2.9 million SMEs and the self-employed contribute 65% of GDP and 75% of jobs (MINCOTUR, 2020). Unfortunately, COVID-19 is having serious consequences on business activity of all types of companies, and especially for the entrepreneurial population (GEM, 2020). The entrepreneurial population is a special group at risk due to the fragility with which they face crises. On the one hand, its financial and human resources are limited. On the other, they have a responsibility for their workers and organizations that magnifies the emotional and economic burden suffered in especially complex situations (Wach et al., 2020). Entrepreneurship was important before the crisis, however, now it is essential to guarantee not only survival, but also to operations, working to solve a problem for which there is no obvious solution, with a strong technological component and high growth potential (Michelino et al., 2017). Its small size and youth imply a shortage of financial and technical resources for the development of new technologies and their launch on the market. Therefore, its innovation and success depend on other types of resources. Thus, the General Objective proposed in this proposal is: to contingently analyze how the individual characteristics of the entrepreneur that lead to creativity (having as a antecedents their gender, age and socioeconomic origin; and cognitive and emotional factors such as psychological capital, psychosocial well-being and stress), those of the founding team (intellectual capital and demographic and functional diversity) and participation in acceleration programs influence the innovation and success of startups. This objective is aligned with Challenge 6 of the State Plan, contributing to the understanding and generation of knowledge about a part of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, incorporating the gender perspective, in its role as a generator of innovation and growth. Starting from a wide database of startups and Spanish accelerators (already available by the members of the proposal), the project includes a longitudinal study (including a multi-case study, online surveys and daily short telephone interviews for 10 consecutive days in two moments of time) to support the initial hypothesis and to achieve the general and specific objectives detailed in the proposal. The proposal is novel because: 1) Compared with previous partial studies, it combines individual, organizational and contextual elements to explain the phenomenon of innovation and the success of Startups. 2) It explains that entrepreneurial creativity, one of the determinants of Startup innovation and success, is a changing state that can be increased by influencing the variables that impacts it. 3) It carries out an analysis of the main characteristics of the founding team that favor innovation and success in Startups. 4) It analyzes the differential impact of participation in acceleration programs from the perspective of Startups. 5) It applies the longitudinal methodology to be able to identify modifications in the variables.

As an active researcher involved in several local and international research groups, I am currently collaborating with colleagues from 26 countries worldwide. I have served as Principal Investigator (PI) for the following research projects: 1. PID2020-114751RB-I00: Innovation in Start-ups: A Contingent Analysis of Entrepreneurial Creativity, Founding Team Characteristics, and Participation in Acceleration Programs (INNOSTART). 2. PY20_00856: Entrepreneurial Creativity as a Key Resource for Innovation and Economic and Psychosocial Well-being in Times of Crisis: A Gendered Analysis. 3. UPO-1258353: Winemaker"s Personality, Innovation, and Local-Regional Articulation as Key Success Factors in Wine Tourism Activities: A Multidisciplinary Study. 4. Arts and Social Sciences Benefactions Fund: Lights and Shadows of Social Media on Women Entrepreneurs: Balancing Professional, Personal, and Biological Benefits and Costs. The Buffering Role of Psychological Resources. (Project No. 212929; Award No. 18444; Co-researchers: Wladislaw Rivkin (TBS), Melissa Conroy (School of Medicine), Alina Paula Cosma (School of Psychology); Funded with €2,000; Duration: 06/02/2024"30/09/2026). 5. Arts and Social Sciences Benefactions Fund: Mapping Entrepreneurial and Employee Well-being: Social Aims, Gender Perspectives, and Contextual Factors (MEW-SAGE). (Project No. 212929; Award No. 18977; Co-researchers: Wladislaw Rivkin (TBS), Melissa Conroy (School of Medicine), Alina Paula Cosma (School of Psychology); Funded with €1,000; Duration: 06/02/2024"30/09/2027). These projects share a common focus on understanding individuals (their personality, well-being, and creativity), emphasizing social innovation, and adopting a gender perspective. Their aims align with multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, and 10). Funding from Projects 1 and 2 has supported collaborations with international groups such as Supporting Entrepreneurship during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Global Study of Entrepreneurs" Resilience and Well-being and ECREABIEN. Longitudinal data collected from these initiatives on social innovation, entrepreneurial creativity, and well-being has been disseminated through academic journals (e.g., Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, International Journal of Manpower), conferences (e.g., Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research, Academy of Management Proceedings), and media outlets. Analysis of this data continues, and further findings will be disseminated over the coming years. Additionally, this funding supported the organization of the International Workshop on Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship in Post-Crisis Times (2022). Funding from Project 3, along with my participation in the international project SO3/P2/F0917 VINCI (European Commission, SUDOE Programme), enabled an in-depth study of the Spanish wine industry, focusing on social innovation through ethnographic analysis, case studies, interviews, and surveys. At Trinity, I have also secured two grants from the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (FAHSS) and one from the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies (SAMS). These support the Workshops on New Entrepreneurial Trends (May 2024) and a new research line on The Lights and Shadows of Social Media on Diverse Entrepreneurs: The Role of Psychological Resources. Additionally, I have applied for a grant to supervise four PhD theses and am currently working on a European Union funding proposal.
