Clinical Senior Lecturer (Clinical Medicine)

Dr Langan is a Consultant in Clinical Neurophysiology in St James's Hospital. She undertook clinical training in Neurology and Neurophysiology in Dublin, London and Newcastle upon Tyne. She spent three years in the Department of Experimental Epileptology in the Institute of Neurology in Queen Square, London, undertaking research into Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). Dr Langan continues to be involved in research into SUDEP along with projects involving EEG and peripheral neurophysiology. She is President of the Irish Society of Clinical Neurophysiology and is active in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

I have a particular interest in epilepsy mortality and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) has been a major focus of my research. I was responsible for the design, conduct and analysis of a case control study examining risk factors for SUDEP, the largest such study to date which has established me as an expert in the field. I was awarded the Hastings Fellowship in support of this work which was also supported by the UK charity Epilepsy Bereaved. This work made a significant contribution to the body of knowledge on the subject and has informed guidelines such as those produced by NICE. This work led to international collaboration with with other experts as part of the work of the International League against Epilepsy(ILAE) commission on epidemiology. I have supported and supervised a Research Fellow in the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology to investigate the role of baroreceptor sensitivity in the genesis of SUDEP, work which was successfully awarded MD and which was supporting by funding from Epilepsy Ireland. This work was awarded the Kirker prize in epilepsy at the Irish Neurological Association meeting in 2013. I have undertaken a study on epilepsy mortality in Ireland in collaboration with the Health Research Board(HRB)and the Irish coroners. We have examined coronial records from 2019 in order to identify and categorise deaths in those with epilepsy with a particular focus on epilepsy related deaths. This work is supported by a grant from the Irish Institute of Clinical Neuroscience and Epilepsy Ireland. This work has resulted in a publication of the incidence of SUDEP in Ireland with work ongoing on other epilepsy related deaths. Presently I am on the steering committee of an International multicentre case control study in SUDEP coordinated by Prof. Peter Bergin in New Zealand and am awaiting ethics approval to identify Irish cases. I am examining EEG changes in those undergoing CAR-T therapy. Further work on this topic will be undertaken with Dr Roisin McMackin of the McMackin Institute. I am one of a number of principal investigators from a number of schools who have been awarded a TRDA undertaking research into disorders of brain development across the lifespan.
