Ms. Sinead Whiting

Assistant Professor (Social Studies)


Sinéad is an Assistant Professor in Social Work and Practice Learning Coordinator in the School of Social Work and Social Policy at Trinity College Dublin. She holds a Masters in Social Work from University College Dublin and a BA(Hons) in History from Trinity College Dublin. Sinead's PhD research is exploring the lived experience of permanency and stability for young adults who grew up in foster care in Ireland. Prior to joining the School of Social Work and Social Policy Sinéad had 20 years' experience working as a social worker across adoption, foster care, child protection and welfare teams. Sinead teaches 'Social Work and Counselling Practice Approaches' and 'Preparation for Practice' as well as Adoption Social Work on the Master in Social Work Course and Introduction to Practice on the Bachelor in Social Studies.

Sinéad's research interests are located in the field of child protection and welfare with a particular focus on the impact of care experiences for young adults who grew up in out-of-home care. She has an interest in research relating to the experiences of children from the Travelling community and other ethnic minority groups. Her PhD research focuses upon experiences of permanency and stability, including adoption, for young people growing up in foster care. Her research draws upon qualitative methodologies. She also has an interest in research relating to Practice Education in a social work context. In the long-term Sinéad plans to pursue research related to both of these areas and contribute to the evidence base that informs social work policy and practice and help illuminate the use of fieldwork/practice placements in social work education.
