Professor Roman Romero-Ortuno is Professor of Ageing Medicine & Frailty (Personal Chair) in the Discipline of Medical Gerontology, School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin, and Consultant Physician at the Mercer's Institute for Successful Ageing, St. James's Hospital, Dublin. Education and Training: He obtained his degree in Medicine from the University of Barcelona in 2002, followed by a Master of Science in European Social Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2003. Alongside his medical education, he studied piano and music theory at the Conservatory of Barcelona. His initial postgraduate medical training was undertaken in Manchester and London, and his higher specialist training in Geriatric and General (Internal) Medicine was completed in Dublin. Clinical Career: From 2014 to 2018, he was Consultant Geriatrician at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and during this period also Honorary Visiting Fellow at the Clinical Gerontology Unit, Department of Public Health and Primary Care, University of Cambridge. Research and Awards: His primary research interest is frailty in ageing adults. His contributions have been recognised with the Rising Star Award of the British Geriatrics Society (2015), the Count of Cartagena Award from the Royal National Academy of Medicine of Spain (2017), and the President of Ireland Future Research Leaders Award (2018). Supported by the latter, he led the FRAILMatics research programme (2019-2025). National and International Leadership: He is a Faculty Member of the Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI), contributing clinical and academic expertise in frailty, dementia, delirium, and comprehensive geriatric assessment. He co-chairs the Irish Frailty Network (IFN) Special Interest Group of the Irish Gerontological Society and co-leads the All-Ireland Frailty Network. In 2025, he was appointed to the Board of the PEACEPLUS Early Frailty Intervention Project (EFIP). At European level, he is a Board Member of the Geriatric Medicine Section of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), where he chaired the 2025 Review Committee of the European Training Requirements for the Specialty of Geriatric Medicine. He is also a member of the Standards Setting Group of the European Geriatric Medicine Specialty Examination (EGeMSE). Education and Training Leadership: He directs Trinity College Dublin's online frailty education programmes, including the 12-week Micro-credential in Assessment and Management of Frailty in Ageing Adults and the one-year, part-time Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Ageing and Frailty Studies. Both programmes are interdisciplinary and open to healthcare professionals across all disciplines. Academic Leadership Roles and Distinctions: - Promotion to Professor in Medical Gerontology (October 2020); - Appointment as Associate Director of Postgraduate Teaching and Learning (M.D. Studies) (December 2020); - Head of the Discipline of Medical Gerontology, Trinity College Dublin (August 2022 to September 2025); - Election to Fellowship of Trinity College Dublin (April 2023); - Election to the Executive Board of the European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS) as Director for Education & Training (2024-2027); - Promotion to Personal Chair in Ageing Medicine & Frailty, Trinity College Dublin (October 2024); - Election to the Executive Committee of the Irish Gerontological Society as Education and International Affairs Representative (September 2025).
