Higher plant taxonomy and floristics; biodiversity and conservation. My base of botanical experience is European but since coming to TCD I have focussed my research interests on the palaeotropics. I have co-authored/edited a number of books: these include, a completely new version of the standard Irish Flora 'Webb's - An Irish Flora'; a new account of the Flora of County Dublin - a project run by the Dublin Naturalists Field Club; a third, with Trevor Hodkinson, deals with the problem of Species-rich groups and the Tree of Life; and a fourth, with a number of authors from TCD, is on Climate Change and Systematics. Most of my paleotropical work has concentrated on revisions for the Flora of Thailand, and recently more generally mainland S.E. Asia. I am an editor of the Flora of Thailand [https://www.dnp.go.th/botany/detail_eng.html?menu=flora_Eng] and various journals including Nordic Journal of Botany and Thai Forest Bulletin, have brought in significant research funding, published well over 200 peer reviewed papers and am on the Council of the World Flora Online project [http://www.worldfloraonline.org].
