ARTS BUILDING

I have taught in Trinity since 1994, and am now Professor of Modern British Literature and Culture. My main areas of research are in nineteenth-century and Edwardian literature and popular literature. I am interested in genre fiction, and especially in horror fiction and supernatural fiction, with particular emphasis in writers such as M. R. James, Arthur Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells, and their contemporaries in fin-de-siècle and Edwardian genre fiction. My latest book, 'For the Dead Remember': The Life of M. R. James, a large-scale biography of the greatest English ghost-story writer, will be published by Oxford University Press in 2026. My current project is a monograph on the Cambridge ghost story, M. R. James and the Ghost Story Men: A Cambridge Tale (Cambridge University Press). I am the General Editor of the Oxford Sherlock Holmes (9 volumes, ongoing), for which series I edited a new edition of The Hound of the Baskervilles (OUP, 2023). I have also edited Conan Doyle's Gothic Takes, H. G. Wells's The Island of Doctor Moreau and The War of the Worlds, M. R. James's Collected Ghost Stories, and Horror Stories: Classic Tales from Hoffmann to Hodgson (all for Oxford University Press), and (with David Lloyd) a critical edition of Terry Pratchett's Night Watch for Penguin Classics. Current and recent PhDs have included: Child death in the Victorian Ghost Story John Wyndham's Cold War Novels Edgar Rice Burroughs and Science Cold War Fiction and Nuclear Anxiety Antarctic Gothic Postmodern Vampires The Representation of the Serial Killer Menstrual Blood and Horror Haunted Space in the Ghost Story Jane Austen and National Identity Mad Science in Victorian Popular Literature The Portrait of the Artist in Modernist Fiction Vampires and the 1980s Beast-Men in the Victorian Novel Victorian and Edwardian Invasion Fiction Overpopulation the the Nineteenth-century Novel Ayn Rand and Posthumanism
