Dr. Philip Hardie is an Assistant Professor of General Nursing at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. He is a registered nurse (RN) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Philip qualified as a General Nurse from St. Vincent"s Healthcare Group in 2011 from University College Dublin. He obtained a Master's degree in Nursing from Trinity College Dublin in 2012 and his PhD from University College Dublin in 2023. Philip also holds a diverse educational background, having achieved the following qualifications: Bachelor of Engineering in Digital Media Technology, Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology (2005); Professional Certificate Advanced Health Assessment, University College Dublin (2015), Professional Diploma in University Teaching and Learning, University College Dublin (2018), Professional Certificate Entrepreneurial Educators, University College Dublin (2018), Professional Certificate Cyberpsychology, Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology (2019). Philip's dedication to quality healthcare is evident in his strong commitment to evidence-based practice. This commitment permeates his roles as a nurse, educator, and researcher. Philip has extensive experience in third-level education, with an ethos that promotes a universal design approach, creating equal opportunities for all students. He advocates a constructivist approach to teaching, believing student-centred learning encompasses students actively constructing meaning and knowledge to gain a deeper understanding of the presented material. He has experience in programme coordination and teaching across all core nursing subject areas at both graduate and undergraduate levels. His teaching interests include curriculum design and development, teaching and learning in the clinical setting, nursing assessment skills, and medication management. Philip has created innovative virtual reality teaching resources and is strongly interested in technology-enhanced education and nursing practices. Philip is an active researcher interested in Patient and Public Involvement in Research, particularly in developing evidence-based educational interventions. He is a keen researcher in technology-enhanced education and learning in clinical learning environments. He is also interested in digital health and its impact on patient care.

Summary
The purpose of the study is to explore the experiences of a Preceptor in clinical practice. In particular, the Preceptorship education and training preceptors received and their self-reported confidence in carrying out a Preceptor's key roles and responsibilities. Therefore, the authors set out to answer the following questions: What training and education do staff nurses/midwives receive to support their role as a Preceptor in clinical practice? What are the current self-efficacy levels amongst preceptors regarding their roles and responsibilities?

Summary
The motivation for this project stems from the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, which requires nursing and midwifery graduates to be equipped with advanced interpersonal, clinical, and critical thinking skills. Evolving skills, such as digital literacy and sustainability competencies, are also paramount for new graduates. With the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) updating its standards (2025), there is a pressing need to develop a curriculum that is not only aligned with these requirements but also inclusive and responsive to the diverse needs of learners. Additionally, the integration of innovative teaching and assessment methodologies is crucial to ensure academic integrity and prepare graduates for the complexities of modern healthcare. This project aims to create a forward-thinking, student-centred curriculum that fosters professional readiness, inclusivity, and adaptability, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the future needs of society and healthcare systems.

Philip is an established nurse academic with a strong record of peer"reviewed publications and national and international conference presentations. He has demonstrated clear research leadership as principal investigator on multiple funded projects and as a supervisor of undergraduate, MSc and PhD research, consistently guiding students to successful completion and dissemination of their work.
