Biography

Jiarong Zhang is an assistant professor in intellectual property law. Her research interests include intellectual property law and emerging technologies, intellectual property law and cultural property & traditional knowledge, data regulation, and intellectual property legal history and theory. Jiarong has published widely in leading international intellectual property law journals. She completed her PhD at the University of Glasgow, School of Law and the CREATe Centre. Before that, she obtained her LL.M. by Research degree in intellectual property law at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and her LL.B. at Nankai University.

Project Title

A Case Study of Robert Burns: Presenting a Distinct Theoretical Foundation for Scottish Copyright Law

Summary

Robert Burns is one of the most significant contributors to Scottish culture. In his pursuit of preserving Scottish oral traditions and establishing a united Scottish cultural identity, the boundaries between what he created and what he preserved were often blurred. Burns had a unique approach to authorship and ownership of cultural production, which can inform a distinct Scottish foundation to copyright law-the main legal regulation of cultural production. This research uses historical, archival methods to understand Burns" relationship with his works associated with (or deriving from) Scottish oral traditions. Dr Amy Thomas from the University of Glasgow is the Lead PI of the project. Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, CREATe, and SCOTLIN are collaborators of this program.
