I am a rheumatologist and epidemiologist with interests in vasculitis, polymyalgia rheumatica, early arthritis, interstitial lung disease in rheumatic diseases, acute medical admissions and outcomes. I have established a prospective longitudinal observational study of polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis in St. James's Hospital. As part of this project blood and tissue samples are utilised for translational research work. This work follows on from my work on a large giant cell arteritis registry during my time in St. Vincent's University Hospital. I am a collaborator on multisite international studies in vasculitis, giant cell arteritis, and polymyalgia rheumatica. I have a strong interest in lung disease in rheumatic diseases, and in particular interstitial lung disease in this area. I have published extensively in this area mainly utilising systematic literature review and meta-analysis to clarify issues around drug safety in this setting. I am part of the acute medicine research group in St. James's Hospital and we have published extensively on outcomes and prognostic factors in acute medical admissions. Finally, during the COVID-19 pandemic I have been the Irish national lead and a member of the clinical and scientific committee for the Global Rheumatology Alliance, an international collaborative project exploring outcomes in patients with rheumatic diseases during the pandemic as well as many other topics related to the impact of the pandemic on rheumatology.
