Biography
Rob joined the Knowledge and Data Engineering Group in 2008 as part of the HEA-funded NEMBES (Networked Embedded Systems) project looking at semantic mapping applications to sensor management systems in smart buildings. Since 2009 he has worked in the SFI-funded FAME (Federated Autonomic Management of End to End Communications Services) project. His current research interests include Linked Data, flexible distributed systems and network management. Prior to joining TCD Rob worked in the Ericsson Network Management Research centre, a couple of networks/data-comms focused startups and Enterprise Ireland's Teltec telecommunications research centre at Dublin City University. He has extensive experience of both academic and industrial collaborative research projects and international standardization. He is a graduate of Dublin City University (BSc in Applied Physics and PhD in Electronic Engineering) and Queens University Belfast (MSc in Computational Science).

Research Projects
Project title FAME, Federated Autonomic Management of End to End Communications Services
Summary Next-generation network management systems with an emphasis on telco solutions. The TCD focus is on adding semantics and rules to the modelling of management information and federating management systems to enable dynamic, end to end management across domains. Rob leads the Home Area Networks (HAN) scenario (working team) within the project.
Funding Agency SFI
Programme SRC

Project title CNGL, the centre for global intelligent content
Summary CNGL is a collaborative academia-industry research centre dedicated to delivering disruptive innovations in digital intelligent content, and to revolutionising the global content value chain for enterprises, communities and individuals.

Project title User Community for Power Consumption Data Collection
Summary This project created a social space on the web for users to share information about the power consumption of devices in their home. It then used semantic techniques to automatically categorise and rank data entries for dynamic presentation to users.

Project title Automated Harvesting of Web Intelligence
Summary A critical source of business intelligence is product data-sheets published on the web in HTML or PDF formats. This work explored new techniques to harvest these specifications and to convert them into a structured knowledge model that can, if necessary, be re-published on the web either as directed advertising or for consumption by linked data mashup applications.

Project title NEMBES, Networked Embedded Systems
Summary The next phase of embedded systems research is networked embedded systems (NES) where embedded systems communicate to form networks of distributed intelligence from the local scale, e.g. responsive buildings, to massively networked systems, e.g. environmental monitoring. This is a unique project addressing the issue of networked embedded systems (e.g. sensors) in a holistic way across the stack from chip design, networking, middleware, and service management. This project is being undertaken with a cross-disciplinary team in conjunction with groups in CIT, UCC, UCD and TCD's DSG. In this project, KDEG is furthering its research in semantic interoperability, semantic driven information routing and declarative means for adapting behaviour of individual devices and their co-ordination within a network.
