Dr. Viet Quoc PHAM is currently an Assistant Professor in Networks and Distributed Systems with the School of Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. He is also affiliated with Research Ireland ADAPT Centre as an Academic Collaborator, with ADVANCE CRT centre as an Academic Supervisor, and with Research Ireland CONNECT Centre as an Associate Investigator. He received the Ph.D. degree in telecommunications engineering from Inje University, Korea, in 2017. Prior to joining TCD, he was in various academic positions with Kyung Hee University, Changwon National University, and Pusan National University.

His research belongs to the areas of mobile edge networks and AI, the fields that are changing very dramatically and need a great effort from the research communities to realize a future 6G ecosystem in the 2030s. His research interest is based on multidisciplinary approaches of computer science, telecommunications, and engineering mathematics for the practical design of complex and communication networks. Based on that vision, he has led the Collective Intelligence and Network AI Lab (COINLab) and focused on three main thrusts, including COmputing (e.g., edge computing, aerial computing, edge of things, and edge AI), Intelligence (e.g., federated learning, machine unlearning, and quantum ML), and Networking (e.g., 6G wireless, network AI, and blockchain).

His current research centres on decentralised machine learning, with a particular focus on data privacy, federated learning, and machine unlearning. Through an interdisciplinary approach, he aims to advance technologies that support distributed intelligence and reliable connectivity at scale and for all. He was selected as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher (in Engineering, Telecommunications, and Computer Science) in 2024. He was honoured with the IEEE ComSoc Best Young Researcher Award for EMEA 2023 in recognition of his research activities for the benefit of the Society.

He currently serves as an Area Editor of IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials, and an Editor of IEEE Communications Letters, IEEE Communications Standards Magazine, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, and IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering. He was the Lead Guest Editor of the IEEE Internet of Things Journal special issue on Aerial Computing for the Internet of Things. He is a senior member of the IEEE, IEEE Communications Society, and IEEE Vehicular Technology Society.

 SHIELD: Reliable Distributed Learning and Smart Contract assisted Digital Ecosystems

Summary
Smart contracts (SC) are transforming how we can enhance automated public services and how the services are executed and controlled in digital ecosystems. Distributed artificial intelligence (DAI) is a new AI paradigm that uses distributed device computing resources to improve data privacy. It is natural to combine SC and DAI to address challenging research issues, including data privacy, security, and network scalability, thus fostering efficient and responsible actions for reliable digital transformation ecosystems in smart cities and novel energy management models. Although promising, there is no high-level reference framework for designing novel SC/DAI-driven solutions and benchmarking testbeds for essential use cases and scaling their implementation internationally. The SHIELD project will offer a new SC/DAI-driven holistic, security, and privacy service architecture and apply it to important use cases in blockchain network ecosystems and smart city/smart energy case studies. SHIELD focuses on public digital services in smart cities using SC/DAI-driven control and operates over edge and global networks. The framework would incorporate robust security measures and privacy-enhancing capabilities in accordance with the sixth-generation (6G) network standards. Exploiting the unique features and research advances on SC/DAI, SHIELD will enable the training, execution, and automated control of e-services with decentralized, contract-based, and secure natures. The framework will enable new models and methods to minimize energy consumption and fraud losses, optimize computing resources and accidental exceptions, and enhance personalization and environmental awareness for micro/macrodigital transformation systems. SHIELD will bring together an international consortium of researchers from the EU and Asia to implement the framework in their lab and testbed facilities. Furthermore, the work carried out in SHIELD will serve as a steppingstone towards large-scale applications, regulations, and governance smart services in 6G with a vision of a new fully digital transformation society.

Summary
ENSURE-6G project will develop robust solutions to provide resilient 6G telecommunication infrastructure in the presence of both cyber and physical attacks in 6G networks. The rationale for the ENSURE-6G project is well justified due to the need for advanced and intelligent security and privacy-enhancing mechanisms deployed in practice within current mobile networks and the necessity of novel efficient mechanisms for future networks. ENSURE-6G will have a strong impact on the careers of all participating staff involved. It will equip them with cutting-edge technical and practical knowledge in the security and privacy of 6G technologies. It will create an opportunity to build a strong professional network and bond with industry partners beyond the project"s completion date. The ENSURE-6G will aim to ensure that the EU is at the forefront of security and privacy requirements of 6G networks and that new security measures are designed to mitigate the risks associated with new 6G end-user devices and users.

This Research Boost Programme grant supports the PI to purchase a high-performance desktop. This equipment is essential for building, testing, and verifying wireless AI and machine learning models. The server will be used mainly for performance evaluation, such as the training of transformers, generative AI, and deep learning models in processing heterogeneous data in federated learning and federated unlearning, simulation of joint resource allocation methods, evaluation of joint learning and unlearning approaches, and support of additional testbed implementations in real-world network environments.

My research interest is centred around collective intelligence and network AI (COIN). Specifically, it is based on multidisciplinary approaches of computer science, telecommunications, and engineering mathematics for the practical design of complex and communication networks. Based on that vision, I have led COINLab and focused on three main thrusts of Network AI: - COmputing (e.g., edge computing and edge AI), - Intelligence (e.g., wireless AI, federated learning, and quantum ML), - Networking (e.g., 6G, Internet-of-Things). My current research focuses on decentralised machine learning and data privacy in distributed systems. This is being advanced through my on-going projects, including: - CHIST-ERA SHIELD: Decentralised ML and practical demonstrators in digital ecosystems (Project Coordinator). Inputs: Last 3 top-5 works (Section 4.3) and publications (Section 4.5). - MSCA SE ENSURE-6G: Privacy and security for beyond 5G and future 6G networks (PI). Inputs: Last 3 top-5 works (Section 4.3) and publications (Section 4.5). My long-term research vision is to guarantee the right to the protection of personal data for everyone and enable privacy-first AI in distributed systems, which has shaped several funding applications, including: - NVIDIA: Quantum AI-native network optimisation, focusing on the physical layer optimisation. - Research Ireland PROTECT: Enabling data erasure for everyone (PI), focusing on data privacy guarantee via preparing for unlearning. This proposal has passed the EoI round and is now under review by Research Ireland. My recent breakthroughs in federated learning and unlearning have received significant attention from both academics and industry. The former is reflected via publications at top-tier venues and international recognitions (e.g., Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher Award and IEEE ComSoc Best Young Researcher Award). The latter has been highlighted by IEEE and IEEE Xplore (2026), attracted strong interest from industry partners across Europe and globally, underscoring its practical relevance in privacy-first AI and telecom (e.g., Telefonica, TU Delft, Sedicii, etc.).
