Dr. Oliviero Gobbo

Assistant Professor (Pharmacy)

Dr Oliviero Gobbo is a pharmaceutical scientist at Trinity College Dublin, where he also completed his PhD. He has over 25 years of experience in academic research, as well as experience in the pharmaceutical industry, where he was involved in the development of novel therapeutics for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and eating disorders. This combination of academic and industry experience provides him with a strong translational perspective on drug discovery, development and delivery. His research focuses on nanomedicine and innovative drug delivery approaches, with particular interests in brain and lung cancer, neuropharmacology, obesity and the development of therapies for challenging diseases. His work integrates pharmaceutical sciences, nanotechnology, pharmacology, imaging and preclinical research, using models including rodents and zebrafish to investigate disease mechanisms, drug efficacy, safety and delivery. In 2023-2024, Dr Gobbo was a Visiting Academic at NYU Abu Dhabi, where he contributed to research and international academic collaboration. Since January 2026, Dr Gobbo has served as Director of Equality, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion within the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, supporting the development of an inclusive and equitable environment for staff and students. Dr Gobbo is also committed to advancing neuro-oncology in Ireland. He co-founded the Irish Neuro-Oncology Society (INOS) and currently serves as its President, promoting collaboration, education and advocacy across the Irish neuro-oncology community.

Project Title
Zebrafish Research Programme and Facility Development
From
2025

Summary
This project will establish a dedicated zebrafish research facility within Trinity College Dublin"s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, creating a shared research infrastructure to support interdisciplinary biomedical and pharmaceutical research. The facility will provide researchers with access to a versatile and cost-effective vertebrate model that offers significant advantages for investigating human health and disease. Zebrafish are increasingly important in biomedical research because of their genetic similarity to humans, rapid development, external fertilisation, optical transparency and high genetic tractability. Their transparent embryos allow developmental processes to be observed in real time, providing an exceptional model for studying embryogenesis, organogenesis, tissue regeneration and other fundamental biological processes. Advances in genome-editing technologies further enable precise investigation of gene function and molecular pathways relevant to human disease.
