My research area is wireless communications. My research develops vital technology components essential to push beyond the boundaries of current communication networks, to cope with the current surge in mobile data demand, in a way that is both economical and sustainable. This can be achieved by distributing the intelligence within the network among many distributed simpler entities while "stretching" the dimensionality of important factors at play, i.e. increasing (i) the radio transmitter deployment density; (ii) the infrastructure dynamics (such as when considering drones as communicating entities); (iii) the radio frequency carrier and bandwidth. As an important complement to the above strategy, I am very interested in studying the implication of the topology of physical and functional interactions within wireless networks in achieving global desired network performance while acting locally based on simple interacting devices. I am a well reputed expert in the domain of digital signal processing and resource allocation for wireless communication, and am pioneering the application of complex systems science to communication networks. When joining TCD in September 2011, I started from one PhD I co-supervised, and by now I built and am running (starting from scratch) a research group, currently being the supervisor of 7 PhD students and 3 postdocs. I already successfully supervised 12 PhD students till their degree completion, and supervised 10 postdocs in the past. I built a very large and diverse international collaboration network, working with several top universities in my field, such as Virginia Tech, University of Edinburgh, and Technische Universität Braunschweig, and visiting prestigious academic institutions in USA, India and Japan, i.e. Virginia Tech (1 month), Indian Institute of Technology (5 months), University of Electro-Communications (1.5 months). I have also been extensively collaborating with Nokia Bell Labs, with their labs in Ireland, France and Germany. I also act as a Senior Academic Lead of the CONNECT-Industry Strategic Collaborative Research Programme. Due to a combined communication engineering & mathematical education and research profile, my work touches upon theoretical aspects of modern communication networks, as well as their practical design challenges. In my career, I focused on aspects that turned out to be crucial in the affirmation of the former generation of wireless networks (4G), such as multiple antenna techniques and autonomous radio resource allocation. After joining TCD, I started to help shape the 5th generation (5G) of communication networks, working on massive deployment of low-power base stations and arrays with up to hundreds of antennas. Such work led to the funding of several EU projects focusing on 5G and beyond networks. I published 77 journals, 95 conference papers, 2 books, 9 book chapters, 5 guest editorials, and filed 4 patents. As PI/Co-PI, I was awarded €1.7 million. I have an h-index of 30, 2,900+ citations in total, and 14 of my publications received at least 50 citations. I regularly publish in top journals and conferences in my field, for example IEEE Transactions or Letters, and IEEE ComSoc flagship conferences such as GLOBECOM and ICC.
