Anne Marie Healy is Professor of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology at Trinity College Dublin with over 30 years of experience in pharmaceutical sciences research and education. Her research programme focuses on the physicochemical and solid-state properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients, and on how these properties are influenced by formulation and processing strategies. This work has led to the development of innovative solid dosage forms for oral and pulmonary delivery and has improved our understanding of drug solubility and bioavailability enhancement. She has published extensively, with over 70% of her publications in the last decade involving international co-authors. Her work has been supported by multiple national and international funding agencies. Prof. Healy has a longstanding record of interdisciplinary collaboration and leadership in major research consortia, including serving as Co-Principal Investigator and Theme Leader for the Research Ireland Centre for Pharmaceuticals (SSPC), and as co-lead of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)-Research Ireland (RI) Centre for Doctoral Training in Transformative Pharmaceutical Technologies. She is a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of Molecular Pharmaceutics and the Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery, and is an Editor of the International Journal of Pharmaceutics. Prof. Healy has supervised 26 PhD students to completion and mentored nearly 30 postdoctoral researchers, many of whom have progressed to successful careers in academia and industry. She is committed to advancing pharmaceutical science through collaborative, translational research and to training the next generation of scientists through inclusive, multidisciplinary programmes.

My research programme is focused on obtaining an increased understanding of the physicochemical properties of active and excipient materials used in a variety of different dosage forms, and on using that knowledge to improve product design in terms of in vitro and subsequently in vivo performance. My current research spans two principal strands: (i) Pharmaceutical material science; (ii) Particle engineering for pulmonary drug delivery. (i) Pharmaceutical material science: My research in this area is aimed at understanding how solid state and micromeritic characteristics of drug and excipient materials are impacted by pharmaceutical processing, and how formulation and/or processing may be optimised so as to control physicochemical characteristics and drug product performance, particularly for oral solid dosage forms. Current research efforts focus on co-processed Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, including amorphous solid dispersions, deep eutectic solvents and ionic liquids. In collaboration with Assoc. Prof. Steven Ferguson (UCD, SSPC), we have combined formulation and engineering expertise to advance co-processed APIs, resulting in multiple co-authored publications and two patent applications on spray-encapsulated ionic liquids. (ii) Particle engineering for pulmonary drug delivery: My group has internationally recognised expertise in spray-drying-based formulation and particle engineering for dry powder inhalation. This expertise led to my involvement in an NIH-funded €8 million international project (2016-2021) led by UCSF, aimed at developing a novel mucolytic therapy for lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis and asthma. The project resulted in a UCSF spinout, Aer Therapeutics, of which I am academic co-founder. Recent collaborations with experts in chemistry, microbiology, and pharmaceutics, including the SSPC community and the University of Pisa, focus on developing inhalable antifungal agents for pulmonary delivery.
