Biography

Prof Elnazir is a Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine with strong academic background. He obtained his PhD from the university of Birmingham UK and completed his clinical training in the UK and Ireland. He has held many key leadership positions during his career with the Asthma Society of Ireland, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, Make a wish Ireland and Internationally with Arab Paediatric Pulmonology association & as a co-founder of Middle East Cystic Fibrosis Association. He also served as a National Specialty Director in Paediatrics at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He decided to expand his horizons by taking a 3 years sabbatical period and joined Al Jalila Children's specialty Hospital in Dubai in 2015 to set up a Paediatric Pulmonology Service. He was very quickly given the task of the Chief Medical Officer where he has steered progress to the fruitful opening of a 200 bed hospital. He had the opportunity to witness and actively help in shaping the development of Al Jalila Children's Hospital as the first standalone children's Hospital in the UAE and the Gulf region. He has recently taken up appointment as the associate Director for Global Relations at School of Medicine TCD with the view to foster international academic and educational opportunities between TCD and medical schools in the Middle East. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed medical journals and presented at national and international meetings. He has also serves as an Editor and Reviewer to many Paediatric medical journals. He has a special clinical and research interest in asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic cough and paediatric sleep medicine.

Summary

We have designed a 'real world' study involving children and adults with CF across ten pediatric and adult CF centres in the UK and Ireland in collaboration with CF registry of Ireland and the UK CF registry. We will be examining a wide range of well-established tests in these people, as well as some newer, more sensitive tests looking at how this new treatment might help the lung and abdominal problems in PWCF. We will be looking at how PWCF feel about this new treatment, how it affects their quality of life and whether it affects their need for, or ability to take, other CF treatments. Lastly we will be determining whether we can predict who will respond to this treatment by taking blood samples from PWCF, generating lung cells from these samples and testing medications on them in the lab.

DISCO (Down's syndrome research group)

Summary

We are collaborating with Prof Eleanor Molloy in this multidisciplinary research group where we will be looking at sleep disordered breathing in children with Down's Syndrome (CWDS). CWDS have a lot of sensory issues which challenge the use of approved gold standard polysomnography testing for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea in this group. We are looking at validating the use of alternative technology which is less disruptive to CWDS and can generate clinically meaningful data. This includes mandibular movement signal based system and/or peripheral arterial tonometery measurement for the diagnosis of sleep apnoea.
