Professor Donal Edward O'Mahony

Fellow Emeritus (Computer Science)

Donal O'Mahony received B.A., B.A.I. (1st class) and Ph.D. degrees from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland in 1982 and 1990 respectively. After a brief career in industry at the Sord Computer Systems (a Japanese microcomputer startup company) in Tokyo where he worked as a researcher on new microcomputer operating systems and at IBM in Dublin, he joined Trinity College as a lecturer in Computer Science in 1984. At Trinity, he coordinates a research group working in the areas of Networks and Telecommunications. Within this group, projects are ongoing in a wide range of areas including electronic commerce, network security and mobile communications technology. He spent the year of 1999 as a Fulbright Fellow at Stanford University, California, before returning to his present position as senior lecturer in computer science at Trinity College. Dr. O'Mahony is a fellow of Trinity College and has published widely in the fields of mobile communications and computer security. He is author of two books, both of which were best-selling titles including his most recent work on Electronic Payment systems, which is in 2nd edition and is widely regarded as the leading text in this field. Dr. O'Mahony has acted as an independent consultant to government and private industry organizations across Europe and to the United Nations on a wide variety of projects involving strategic networking issues. Dr. O'Mahony has grown his research group over a 15 year period from a handful of researchers to today's team of three academic staff and over 20 post-graduate students. In this time, he had raised funds from a wide range of sources including Enterprise Ireland, the US Air Force Research Laboratories, Hewlett-Packard Research and the European Union.
