Biography
The following ongoing research projects in my laboratory are fundamental studies aimed at developing new therapies for infectious and immune-mediated diseases and cancer
  • Studies on human pyrophosphate-specific γδT cells and their interactions with other cells in the stimulation and regulation of immune responses
  • Functional studies on human glycolipid-specific, CD1d-restricted T cells (NKT cells) and their reciprocal interactions with dendritic cells
  • Functional studies on human NKT cells and their roles in B cell maturation and antibody production in health and in systemic lupus erythematosus.
  • Studies on roles of γδT cell subsets in immunity and immunodeficiency in human immunodeficiency virus infection.
  • An investigation of a possible role for natural killer cells and innate T cells in the immunology, pathology and treatment of hepatitis B virus infection
  • An investigation into the mechanisms employed by the hepatitis C virus to evade the host immune response

Description of Research Interests
  • Leukocyte biology: functional studies on human leukocytes with a particular interest in “innate lymphocytes” (natural killer cells, CD1-restricted T cells and gamma delta T cells) and dendritic cells.
  • Immunology of the human liver: examination of the healthy liver as a specialised organ of the immune system and investigation of immune mechanisms that contribute to pathologies associated with hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hepatic malignancies and autoimmune liver diseases
  • Immunology and genetics of human disease: including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, cystic fibrosis, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, primary antiphospholipid syndrome and schizophrenia
  • Teaching: course design, delivery and assessment of undergraduate level immunology, biochemistry, physiology, genetics and cell biology, co-director of an MSc programme in Immunology and Global Health at NUI Maynooth, research supervisor and examiner at BSc, MSc, PhD and MD levels, author of textbook chapters.
