Dr. Mary Davoren

Clinical Senior Lecturer (Psychiatry)

Dr Davoren is a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist and Clinical Senior Lecturer in Forensic Psychiatry, Trinity College Dublin. Dr Davoren is a visiting Professor of Forensic Psychiatry at the University of Bari, "Aldo Moro", Italy. She is a member of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland and a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (FRCPsych UK). Dr Davoren is the Vice President of the Medical Council of Ireland. Dr Davoren is the Consultant lead for the High Dependancy ward at the Central Mental Hospital Dundrum, Dublin. She is also the academic lead for the prospective longitudinal study evaluating the patient benefit the new development National Forensic Mental Health Service (NFMHS) Campus at Portrane, North Dublin, the Dundrum Forensic Redevelopment Evaluation (D-FOREST) Study (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT05074732). Prior to taking up her current role, Dr Davoren was a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist on personality disorder pathway Broadmoor High Secure Hospital England. She was the High Secure Research lead for Broadmoor Hospital, a maximum-security hospital serving London and the South of England. Dr Davoren was the academic coordinator of the Broadmoor seminars conference series 2016 - 2019. Dr Davoren previously completed an Academic Clinical Fellowship at the Violence Prevention Research Unit of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), one of the member units of the Violence Prevention Alliance of the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr Davoren was a previous recipient of the Young Scholar award of the South London and Maudsley Trust Forensic Research Day London (2015), the best research award at the Forensic Faculty of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (2015), the Mohsin Naguib research award of the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (2013) for research into the needs of older prisoners and the new research award of the Winter Meeting of the Irish College of Psychiatrists (2011). She was also a recipient of an EU Cooperation in Science and Technology (EU COST) short term scientific mission in Forensic Psychiatry (Netherlands - 2015). She completed her medical degree at the National University of Ireland and an M.D. higher degree in research in Forensic Psychiatry, Trinity College Dublin. She has published book chapters and research papers in the area of prisoner health care needs, recovery in forensic settings and the impact of covid-19 in forensic settings.

Member of the National Office for Suicide Prevention, National Implementation working group. This was a multi-disciplinary committee of the Department of Health aimed at reducing suicide rates nationally by supporting initiatives to prevent deliberate self-harm and suicide in Ireland. I was the representative for the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland. 2012
External advisory role recently commenced with Sozosei Foundation (USA). This is a philanthropic group in the USA which are funding research projects aimed at decriminalisation of mental illness. The group have requested input and advice regarding what works for decriminalising mental illness in Europe prior to launching their research grants and funding calls. https://www.sozoseifoundation.org May 2021
Member of the Ethics Committee of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland, and in this role I co-authored the College position paper on the upcoming Dying with Dignity bill. 2021
I am a member of the Psychiatry Committee of the Irish Hospital Consultants Association (IHCA), representing forensic psychiatry and general psychiatrists on this national body. 2021
Member of the Books Committee of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London in conjunction with Cambridge University Press. The role of the committee is to decide the college priorities for book publication and to review book proposals and manuscripts on behalf of the RCPsych in conjunction with the editorial team from CUP. 2018
