Professor Barbara Ryan

Prof Barbara Ryan, MD, MSC, FRCPI is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Tallaght University Hospital and Clinical Professor of Gastroenterology at TCD. She was Clinical Lead in Gastroenterology at TUH from 2007-2020. She has a special interest in pancreatobiliary disease and complex endoscopic intervention and also in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). She had a distinguished undergraduate career including TCD Scholarship in 1990. She gained her Doctorate of Medicine (MD) degree from Trinity College in 2000 and also completed a MSc in Molecular Medicine from Trinity in 2000. She finished her higher specialist training in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine in Ireland in 2001 and then moved to the Medische Klinikum Rechts der Isar (MRI), Technical University of Munich, Germany, where she was a visiting Fellow in Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS). Following this, she took up a position as a Clinical and Research Fellow at the University Hospital of Maastricht, the Netherlands, where she worked from 2001-2003. Here she honed her skills in EUS and hepatobiliary intervention and also her clinical and research interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). A consultant position in the UK at the Manchester Royal Infirmary followed from 2003-2004, before she took up her current consultant post at AMNCH. She was voted a 'Rising Star' in Gastroenterology by the United European Gastroenterology Federation (UEGF) in 2003 and won numerous awards for her post-graduate research, from the Irish Society of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the UEGF. She was National Specialty Director for higher specialist training in Gastroenterology in Ireland from 2012-2015. She has been on the Executive Board of the Irish Society of Gastroenterology since 2005 and is also a former Treasurer. She has been on the gastroenterology advisory panel for Colorectal Cancer for the Irish National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP). She has been actively involved in teaching (undergraduate and post-graduate) and research for the past 20 years. She has been a reviewer for numerous international journals including the Digestive Diseases and Science, Gut, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics and the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and has delivered invited lectures in Ireland and Europe and has also frequently been on faculty at national and international meetings.

I have been involved in basic and translational research for all of my professional career and there are a number of strands to my research and these can be consolidated into four main areas. 1. Inflammatory Bowel Disease 2. Pancreatic Disease and Interventional Pancreatobiliary Endoscopy. 3. Biomarkers in GI disease 4. Coeliac disease. I also have a major clinical interest in functional digestive conditions including IBS, Functional Dyspepsia and Functional Biliary Sphincter Disorder (formerly Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction). A
