Dr. Seamus Lawless

Ussher Assistant Professor (Computer Science)


Prof. Séamus Lawless is an Assistant Professor in the Artificial Intelligence discipline in the School of Computer Science and Statistics. He is the Director of the Knowledge and Data Engineering Group (, which has more than 100 members. In the SFI ADAPT Centre (, he is Associate Director, with responsibility for research funding. Séamus is Co-PI on Beyond 2022 (, an IRC project which aims to digitally recreate the Public Record Office of Ireland, destroyed in 1922. Séamus primary research is in the area of Personalised Information Retrieval. This involves work in the areas of Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, User Modelling, Recommender Systems and Digital Humanities. All of his research has a strong user focus, and aims to improve the experiences of users when interacting with and consuming content. He has authored 100+ peer-reviewed, high-impact publications with more than 1000 citations. Séamus has coordinated and delivered 13 research projects, and has been responsible for more than €5m in research funding across a variety of highly competitive national and international funding mechanisms. Through the supervision of 10 PhDs and dozens of masters students, Séamus has guided cutting-edge student research. Séamus has designed, developed and delivered highly innovative teaching programmes at both under-graduate and post-graduate level. Séamus has coordinated and collaborated with researchers in the disciplines of Linguistics, English, History, Pedagogy, Speech and Language Technologies and Localisation. Through these collaborative research projects in such a variety of disciplines he has developed insight and skills in communication and in conducting multi-disciplinary research. Séamus has significant industry experience, having worked in the IT, Financial Services and Retail sectors, which has provided him with a wealth of commercial experience which he incorporates into his research.
