Dr. Mary Mooney (PhD, MSc, RGN, RM, RNT, MA, Higher. Diploma Cardiovascular Studies) is a lecturer in general nursing and a specialist in cardiovascular nursing in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College. Her research areas focus predominantly on cardiac-related aspects of patient care and nurse education. Her research experience encompasses qualitative and quantitative research methods, including randomised controlled trials, cross-sectional studies, longitudinal and cohort studies. Her PhD, which was a randomised controlled trial, comprised delivering an educational intervention to patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome. This HRB funded study was the first RCT in the world to target and successfully reduce patient pre-hospital delay time and its groundbreaking effect has been renowned for its effectiveness in reducing patient delay in the presence of heart attack symptoms. Her work has been used to develop further international research with which she is currently actively engaged. In terms of research funding, Mary has been Principal Investigator or a co-applicant across a range of projects, from a variety of funding sources. She has many National and international collaborates and is the academic lead for the International Winter and Summer School at Trinity College Dublin. Mary maintains a clinical remit in cardiology, in addition to her academic role. She is clinical advisor to an Irish Enterprise, funded by Enterprise Ireland. Prior to this appointment, she was engaged as a consultant for patient education and interventionist training with two international companies. In March 2019 Mary was appointed to the board of an International Steering Committee for a Multi-centre, double blind, randomized,placebo-controlled RCT. She was elected to the committee of the Irish Nurses Cardiovascular association (INCA) in 2019 and is an external examiner (post-graduate)for the National University of Ireland, Galway. As conference chairperson at Trinity College Dublin, Mary has successfully organised the TCD international research conferences over a number of years. She is actively engaged in research, most of which is concerned with cardiovascular or critical care aspects. She has been an invited speaker and presenter across a range of national and international events.
