Oral health is important. The mouth has been described as a "window" to the rest of the body. There is increasing evidence of the association between oral disease and chronic conditions including diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disease, and cognitive decline. The World Health Organization's (WHO) Global Oral Health Action Plan 2023-2030 specifically highlights the importance of the integration of Oral Health and General Health, also highlighting the need for a multi-disciplinary approach to research in this area. The overall aim of my research is to investigate the relationship between oral health and general health, and explore the underlying mechanisms involved.
