My research is directly focused on behavioural, developmental and healthcare streams. The aim of my research is to increase the understanding of how children with complex needs learn and how they change across developmental spans. I have a particular interest in the application of findings to neurodevelopmental disorders conducting research that addresses intervention, health care and prevention by engaging in a fully integrated approach linking basic and clinical research. Key aspects include conducting early-stage research in areas of unmet clinical need including diagnostics, therapeutic intervention and strategies targeted at prevention. Further, I am passionate about the dissemination of behavioural interventions as evidence-based practices to healthcare workers. My research programmes are typically carried out in community settings/clinics/hospitals and involve working with children and families individually including ASD/ID; Fragile X, Neurofibromatosis; ADHD. I have created a pivotal hub in the emerging network of European and global networks through collaborations and partnering, and to enhance the educational capacity of autism research, not only in Ireland but in a larger European and international setting. The complementarity of my research here at Trinity College and that of my international research partners, represents a considerable degree of interdisciplinary coherence and compatibility, consistent with Trinity College's deep commitment to the ethos of interdisciplinary collaboration and research. I am fully committed to building this capacity for greater research partnerships in the future. My contribution to the behavioural literature, on intervention research studies conducted in real-world clinical settings, has demonstrated the effectiveness of novel strategies to reduce well-documented core symptomatic and co-occurring challenges, in children and adolescents with ASD. My research has had an impact on driving international policy in best treatment practices for Autism. The American Academy of Pediatrics utilised my research in constructing their policy statement on Sensory Integration Therapies for children with Developmental and Behavioural Disorders.
