My main research involves molecular epidemiological investigations and characterisation of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), methicillin susceptible S. aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci from hospital, community and animal sources. The aim of this work is to improve surveillance of staphylococci and reduce the burden on patients and the healthcare system. This includes genotyping staphylococcal isolates using the most up to date molecular techniques such as whole-genome sequencing and microarray technology, characterisation of isolates with enhanced virulence and/or resistance potential and characterisation of mobile genetic elements harbouring resistance and virulence genes among staphylococci including bacteriophage, plasmids and the staphylococcal chromosomal cassette mec (SCCmec) element. My other research interests include the development of novel decontamination strategies, hand hygiene, rapid detection methods for controlling microbial spread in hospitals and molecular characterisation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
