Dr. Damian Murchan

Damian Murchan is Associate Professor in the School of Education at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin, and is Vice President of the Association for Educational Assessment-Europe. Formerly a teacher and principal in primary schools, he has held additional leadership positions in recent years as Head of the School of Education and Head of the School of Creative Arts in Trinity College. His experience, teaching and research interests span Primary, Secondary and College levels, including initial and continuing education for teachers. Damian"s research interests include educational reform, assessment methods, e-learning, and professional development for teachers. A member of the Research In School Education (RISE) group in the School of Education in Trinity, his current research focuses on regulatory and ethical implications of using data analytics in digital assessments and on the process of assessment reform at secondary level. Damian is co-editor of the book "Curriculum Change Within Policy and Practice" (Palgrave, 2021) that explores the recent reform of the Junior Cycle of post-primary education and he has provided technical advice to the Irish State Examinations Commission on post-marking adjustments to the Leaving Certificate examination in the post-pandemic era. His book "Understanding and Applying Assessment in Education" (SAGE, 2017), provides an analysis of assessment policy and practice in primary and post-primary education internationally. A Second Edition of this book will be published in April 2024. He has held a number of advisory roles in relation to the development of assessment policy and practice in Ireland and internationally. He co-chaired organising committees that hosted major international education conferences in Ireland, including the International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement (ICSEI, January 2024) and the Annual Conference of the Association for Educational Assessment " Europe (November 2022). Damian"s research is widely disseminated through journals and conference presentations internationally and he recognises the value of communicating educational ideas to wider audiences. He is a frequent contributor to print and broadcast media in both the English and Irish languages. He tweets @damianmurchan. He is available to supervise Doctoral students in the areas of Educational assessment and testing; Evaluation; and Educational reform.
